MTU Email Conversion - Backup and Restore
There are several backups and copies of email kept. First we keep a copy of every email sent to an mtu.edu address for 30 days. We refer to this as the 30 day backup. We also do point-in-time copies of everyone's email home. These point-in-time copies are known as checkpoints. The checkpoint is of everything in your mail folders, no matter how old.
We take the checkpoints on hourly, daily and weekly schedules. We take the hourly checkpoints at about 08:00, 12:00, 16:00 and 20:00 and keep 6 copies on hand. We take the daily checkpoints at about midnight Monday through Saturday and keep 2 copies on hand. We also take the weekly checkpoints at midnight on Sunday and keep 2 copies on hand. We also backup to tape every night everyone's mailbox which we retain for 30 days.
Users can restore accidentally deleted email using the "Restore Accidentally Deleted Email" tool on the "Email at Michigan Tech" web site (http://email.mtu.edu). When you use that tool you are presented a list of the checkpoints and 30 day backup. Here is an example list from 14:00 hours on February 20:

The items listed "month day time" are checkpoints which are the point-in-time copies of the entire mailbox. "All mail received in the last 30 days" is the email that was sent in the last 30 days and stored in the 30 day backup. You can restore your email from any of the items listed.
