MTU Email - System Administrator Observations

Issue: (EE) Eudora pop user tries to read mail but it just hangs and never comes back with the mail.

Action: The SSL implementation on Eudora 5.1 for POP does not work well. Either configure to not use SSL (if on-campus office desktop). Or better yet, upgrade to Eudora 5.2.

Issue: (Chemistry) Eudora user can't get at Spam folder, does not see it in the list.

Action:After some study, it was determined the user had entered "email.mtu.edu" in the box labelled "IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix" in the IMAP server settings, instead of leaving it blank. The user redid his config, leaving it blank like he is supposed to. Everything was OK.

Issue: (Fine Arts) On a Mac, how do you get Eudora configured to use SSL?

Action:See Eudora Document 2310HQ

Note that this document says you can download a Keychain for Mac OS prior to 9.x, but in fact it does not seem this is available any longer. For best success, user must have Eudora 5.2 and a newer Mac OS.

Issue: (West Engineering) In Netscape Mail, user tried to delete an imap folder and got message "Can't create mtu_imap/Trash/: File exists".

Action: There is a server setting you can change and after that folder deletions will work. Edit/Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings/Server Settings/Advanced Uncheck "Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages"

Issue: (Humanities) In Pine, ssl/tsl verification error.

Action: Make sure you have cert.pam file in your base ssl directory and make sure it is linked to ca-bundle.crt in the cert directory.

Issue: (SBE) Netscape user followed all the instructions to change his Netscape configuration from departmental mail server to central imap server. It won't get mail, he has rechecked every setting.

Action: User deleted the mail account entirely. And recreated new account per instructions. Works now.

Issue: (CEE) Eudora user can't update or refresh a certain mailbox, just hangs. Often seen with INBOX after user first changes configuration to use new server.

Action:Make sure user is logged out of Eudora. Go to Eudora data directory, enter the IMAP directory and move the affected folder somewhere else (or delete it). Have user get back into Eudora, click Dominant, choose Refresh Mailbox List.

Typical location for Eudora IMAP directory is here (but it is configurable so it could be somewhere else):
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe User\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\Imap\Dominant

Issue: (EE) Eudora or Outlook user says they have checked and rechecked every setting on their mail package on their home computer but it won't send mail. It receives mail fine.

Action: User may have Norton (or other virus scanner) installed which interferes with SSL dialog. Suggest the user change the Norton settings to uncheck the box that says "scan outgoing mail". A reboot after Norton config change may be required before outgoing mail will work.

Above is a collection of observations made by system administrators. Keep in mind that various factors in a given user's configuration can mean that something that works for a different user might not be directly applicable. Something to add? Send suggestions to: dcs@mtu.edu
