Email at Michigan Tech

E-mail Abuse

Below are examples of e-mail abuse activities not allowed at MTU.

Spam

Spam is broadly defined as unsolicited, e-mail sent to a large number of recipients. Michigan Tech's e-mail accounts are not allowed to be used for the purpose of sending SPAM messages. Not only is this a misuse of University resources, but it can also result in external sites "black listing" MTU, prohibiting delivery of any future Michigan Tech e-mailings to that location.

Chain Letters and Pyramid Schemes

These e-mail messages describe a "get rich quick" or other scheme. The recipients are then asked to forward the message on to more people. These types of messages are illegal and not allowed on the MTU network. Accounts found associated with chain letters or pyramid schemes may be turned off without warning.

Spoofing

Spoofing refers to someone sending mail that "appears" to be from someone else. This is the same as forging someone else's identity, which is not allowed.

Harassment

Harassment via e-mail, as with other avenues of communication, is prohibited.

This is not a complete listing of e-mail policies. Official University policies are collected into Michigan Tech Handbooks (Student Handbook, Faculty Handbook, Staff Handbook).

MTU reserves the right to revoke access to any and all electronic resources.
