Some Troubleshooting Hints

Notice for Off Campus Users:

As a security measure to avoid big spam incidents, many ISP's block outgoing internet traffic on Port 25, which is the usual port for sending email. Charter Communications, SBC, ATT and AOL are a few examples of ISPs which do this blocking. Therefore, the MTU mail server, email.mtu.edu will allow connections on Port 2525 or Port 2526 as alternatives to the standard Port 25. Port 2525 allows SBC and Charter subscribers to use MTU's mail relay to send mail. Port 2526 allows Mac laptops to function with same setting both on and off campus.

Note about Outlook: Outlook 2002 and Outlook Express will not work with Port 2525 due to limitations in those products ability to handle SSL. If you are a SBC or Charter subscriber and wish to use either of these Microsoft supplied mail programs, you will need to use your ISP's outgoing mail server. Please follow your ISP's user help pages for outgoing mail.

HuskyMail: Accessing your email through a web browser is easy with HuskyMail. It provides folders, filters, and is easy to use - no pesty configuration required. If you use multiple folders, we suggest that you use the help feature to learn how to subscribe and unsubscribe to the ones that you want.

Secure Connections: The email.mtu.edu server is able to provide secure internet connections. You may hear these referred to as SSL connections. This is very similar to online shopping, in that the information sent between your computer and the MTU email server is encrypted. If you are working from the MTU network (on campus or in MTU residence halls), using a secure connection is optional but recommended. If you are working from outside the MTU network (local internet provider such as up.net, Pasty Central or Charter Communications), you must use a secure connection. All sets of instructions include steps needed to configure the secure internet connection which is required for those accessing from outside the MTU network. The same programs are available for Macintosh computers, and configuration should be very similar.

POP Protocol: Instructions for setting up a POP client are provided, for those whose department recommends this protocol POP Configuration.
