What is LDAP and what is it used for?

LDAP stands for the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and is used to look up names and contact information for people in the directory. You can use it to lookup the contact information for your instructors and other students (depending on their privacy settings).

How do I configure Mac Mail to use LDAP?

You can also search for email addresses here - https://www.mtu.edu/mtuldap/web_lookup/ Or you can use LDAP from within Mac Mail to look up names and e-mail address.

  1. Open Mac Mail and launch the Address Book application.
  2. Go to Address Book and then Preferences
  3. Select the LDAP tab and click Add
  4. Now fill out the form as follows:
    • For Name:, type the name you want MTU Lookup
    • For Server:, type ldap.mtu.edu
    • For Search Base: type: ou=people,dc=mtu,dc=edu
    • Type in 389 for the port number
    • Click Save.

How do I use LDAP?

  • Launch Mac Mail and compose a message.
  • Type a name or partial email address into the To: box. After you stop typing, a list of possible matches should appear. Select the appropriate match by clicking on it.
  • The address should now show in the To: box of your compose screen. Make sure it is the address and name of the person intended!
  • Compose and send message.
