What is LDAP and what is it used for?

LDAP stands for the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and is used to look up names and contact information for people in the directory. You can use it to lookup the contact information for your professors or teaching assistants or even fellow students depending on their privacy settings.

How do I use LDAP with Outlook Express?

Luckily, you can use LDAP from Outlook Express to look up names and e-mail address and even add them into your local address book. You can also look online here - https://www.mtu.edu/mtuldap/web_lookup/.

  1. Open Outlook Express and go to Tools and then Account Settings. [Image]
  2. Go to the Address Books tab and click on New... [Image]
  3. Make sure that Internet Directory Service (LDAP) is selected and click Next [Image]
  4. Type in ldap.mtu.edu under Server Information and click on More Settings... [Image]
  5. If you see a dialog telling you to exit and restart Outlook, click OK and ignore it for now. [Image]
  6. Under Display Name, type the name you wish to have displayed, such as Michigan Tech Directory. Make sure that port 389 is listed. [Image]
  7. Go to the Search tab and type the following text in bold exactly with no spaces and click OK: ou=people,dc=mtu,dc=edu [Image]
  8. Click Next [Image]
  9. Click Finish [Image]
  10. Click Close [Image]
  11. Go to File -> Exit then open Outlook 2007 again [Image]
  12. When you want to search for somebody, look on the toolbar under the menu bar where it says Search address books and type in either the full name or username of the person you are searching for and press Enter when finished. [Image]
