What is LDAP and what is it used for?
LDAP stands for the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and is used to
look up names and contact information for people in the directory. You can
use it to lookup the contact information for your professors or teaching
assistants or even fellow students depending on their privacy settings.
How do I use LDAP with Outlook Express?
Luckily, you can use LDAP from Outlook Express to look up names and
e-mail address and even add them into your local address book. You can
also look online here - https://www.mtu.edu/mtuldap/web_lookup/.
- Open Outlook Express
- Go to Tools -> Accounts
- Click Add, then select Directory Service..
- Type ldap.mtu.edu for the Internet Directory (LDAP) server and click Next
- Choose No and click Next
- Click Finish
- Select it from the list of directories, and click Properties
- Type a new name for it, such as Michigan Tech Directory
- Go to the Advanced tab and under Search base: copy and paste the following exactly: ou=people,dc=mtu,dc=edu
- Click OK and Close
How can I search for somebody?
- You can either click the arrow next to Find and choose People or press Ctrl and E
- Under "Look in:" choose the name you typed for the directory
- Type the name and/or e-mail address of the person you are
looking up. For more advanced searches, click Advanced. Choose the
criteria and enter a value, then click Add. When you are ready to look
the person up, click Find Now
- If you wish to add that person to your address book for faster future reference, click Add to Address Book
