Client Configuration > Pine for POP servers
Pine
Pine is a text-only email program. These instructions are designed
for people who use Pine from a Unix server in a computer lab (i.e. you
telnet/ssh to your department's server and run Pine from there).
-
From within Pine, type M to go to the main menu screen.

-
Type S to choose Setup.

-
Type C to choose the Configuration option. Here you are presented
with a list of options; select them by using the arrow keys to move up
and down and pressing the Return key to change the values. There
are lots of options, and sometimes it can be difficult to find a specific
option. You can search the list of options by pressing the W
key and entering a word to search for.

Note:
Some of the settings below are not visible by default. Before changing any
settings, you must enable the expose-hidden-config option.
Press W to search and enter the word expose to jump to the
expose-hidden-config option. Press the Return key to enable
this option. Press e to exit setup, answering Yes when prompted to
save your changes. Press S and C to reenter the Setup and
Config menus. You will now be able to configure all necessary options. The
settings below must be changed to use Pine with the email.mtu.edu server.
-
personal-name - This is the name that mail recipients
see. Most people will opt for their real name.
-
user-domain - This should be set to mtu.edu.
-
smtp-server - Enter email.mtu.edu/tls/user=jsmith.
This provides Pine with your MTU UserID (jsmith in this
case) so you will only be prompted for your password.
-
inbox-path - Enter {email.mtu.edu/pop3/ssl/user=jsmith}inbox.
Again, replace jsmith with your own MTU UserID.
Some users have reported problems with
this configuration. If this is the case, enter
{email.mtu.edu/pop3/ssl/user=jsmith}inbox for the
inbox-path value.
-
folder-collections - Pine will normally create a folder
in your home directory titled mail where it will store
your saved email. However, this will make your messages
unavailable to other IMAP mail clients. If, for example, you use
HuskyMail to check your
mail via a web browser, you will be unable to access your stored
messages. Creating a collection of folders that is stored on the
email.mtu.edu server instead of on your home directory will allow
you to access your messages from any compatible email client.
Enter {email.mtu.edu}[] here to keep your Pine folders
on the email.mtu.edu server. You can leave this blank if you
prefer to keep all of your stored mail locally. You can still
create a local archive of messages if you would like to back up
your mail from time to time. Instructions for doing this in Pine
are available here.
-
rsh-open-timeout - Entering 0 here will prevent a 15-second
pause as Pine attempts to contact the mail server.
-
Type E to exit when you are finished and you will be prompted
to save your changes. Quit Pine and restart it to ensure that your
settings will take effect. Pine will now be ready to connect via SSL
to email.mtu.edu. You will be prompted for your UserID and ISO Password
when you start Pine.
