POP Client Configuration

Configuring your mail client to use IMAP is recommended - the IMAP protocol stores your mail on the mail server, allowing you to access the same messages and folders no matter what client you are using. However, POP connections are available if your department recommends it. For an overview of the two protocols, please read the IMAP vs. POP document.

Notice for SBC or Charter Communications subscribers:
Many ISP's block outgoing internet traffic on Port 25, which is used to send mail. Therefore, the MTU mail server, email.mtu.edu will allow connections on Port 2525 as well as Port 25. This allows SBC and Charter subscribers to use mail clients such as Mozilla mail or Thunderbird mail.

However, neither Outlook nor Outlook Express will work with Port 2525 due to limitations in those products in how they handle SSL. If you are a SBC or Charter subscriber and wish to use either of these Microsoft supplied mail programs, you will need to use your ISP's outgoing mail server. Please follow your ISP's user help pages for outgoing mail.

MTU reserves the right to revoke access to any and all electronic resources.
