Client Configuration > Troubleshooting
If you have problems using your email client to connect, check the
following:
-
There may be software installed on your home computer which
interferes with outgoing mail. Some Norton system programs fall into
this category. Follow the instructions that come with Norton to change
the settings so it does not scan outgoing mail.
-
Trapped SMTP - Many Internet Service Providers (ISP's) such as SBC, Charter
Communications and AOL will trap any attempt to send e-mail using any
SMTP server on Port 25 other than their own. Therefore, we also
allow Port 2525 for outgoing mail. Or, you may configure your
e-mail client to use your ISP's recommended SMTP server,
following instructions from your ISP.
-
Outlook and Trapped SMTP - If your ISP traps SMTP Port 25, you will not be
able to configure Outlook or Outlook Express to use MTU's outgoing email
server. The Outlook software cannot handle the needed communication.
Therefore if you live off campus, you will need to use your own ISP's
SMTP mail server, following instructions from your ISP. Or use a mail
program other than Outlook or Outlook Express.
-
Make sure Microsoft Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is NOT
enabled - it is for Microsoft mail servers only.
