Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What does the Ironport service do with e-mail messages?

A: Before delivery to central e-mail mailboxes, all messages are passed through a filter. Messages rated to have 90% or greater probability are eliminated. Messages rated to have 50% or greater probability of being spam are quarantined.

Q: How do I get a message that has been quarantined but shouldn't have been?

A: At the MySpam web interface (http://myspam.mtu.edu) you can check the message and click "Not Spam". It will show up in your inbox after ten minutes or so.

Q: Why do I still get spam if we have a spam filtering system?

A: Spammers are tricky and change their methods frequently. Our antispam service receives frequent updates so new types of spam are recognized and trapped.

Q: Do I get any notice about blocked messages?

A: Yes, you will get a daily digest listing all blocked messages. From this digest message, you may click on any message ID to release that message. After about ten minutes, it will arrive in your inbox.

HuskyMail users may visit the MySpam web site (http://myspam.mtu.edu), check the message wanted and click "Not Spam".

Q: How long are messages held in quarantine?

A: Blocked messages are retained for fourteen days.

Q: What if a message contains a virus?

A: Messages containing a virus are quarantined in an area off limits to users. Neither the sender nor the intended recipient are notified. Current viruses are so frequent and the headers are often misleading, thus notification is an annoyance and the handling is "silent".

Q: Sometimes a spam message will contain unsubscribe information. Should I use it?

A: Usually, no, this is a bad idea. Spammers never respect requests to unsubscribe and using their unsubscribe links usually results in yet more spam. However, if you have reason to know that the correspondence is from a legitimate vendor or organization, you can follow the unsubscribe instructions. As a courtesy to all, you should unsubscribe from any newsletters you no longer are interested in, rather than block the sender.

Q: Where can I send my questions that are not answered here?

A: You may send questions about spam filtering to: email @ mtu.edu
